Alexandra Jacobs
Picture
Alexandra Jacobs was born in Bideford, Devon. She has lived in Devon, Dorset and Berkshire, and has now returned to Devon since her ‘retirement’. She has produced public ‘site specific’ art and has worked commercially as well as privately. She has also run painting courses for many years. As well as being a member of the 21 Group she is an Academician of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, where she now serves as a Trustee.

Her early influences in painting have been several and various. Vermeer, Degas, Milton Avery, Mark Rothko, Francis Bacon, and Howard Hodgkin have all played a part in forming her methods of painting. Memory is an increasingly important source of the image. Beginning with sketches and small watercolour studies, her emotional response and the visual ‘after image’ affect the finished work. The painting Red Barn depicts a scene near home that she rides past regularly. In 2013 the strength of the sun rendered the image in a myriad different ways. As in Monet’s Haystacks, the colours changed from morning to midday, afternoon and evening. The painting shows the barn towards the end of the afternoon just before the temperatures start to fall.
