In my work, landscape serves as a kind of cartography - mapping not a geographic place, but a more nebulous terrain. I draw on traditions both Eastern and Western; the resulting works are not records of place, but reflections on states that are at once material and interior. The oval vignette, introduced in my recent paintings, once enshrined saints, courtly portraits, pastoral scenes, and Victorian keepsakes - artefacts that offered images of perfection and memory. Here, the vignette frames something less certain: a terrain that hovers between states, unsettled and unresolved, yet grounded in the very material shifts of painting itself. His work is held in private and institutional collections across the UK and abroad. |
