Artist's Portfolio
Jean-Alice Coombe
I grew up in Scotland then moved to London and the South East. I was an art student for five years and moved into Art Education, becoming a Head of Expressive Arts and contributing to the Art Teachers’ Handbook. I spent some time teaching on the Dartington Hall Estate. My work has been exhibited widely in the South West and beyond. At present I work from two studios – one at home, and one at Dartington.
I am interested in both still life and landscape. The calm contemplation of everyday objects reveals inestimable riches that are easily overlooked and not really seen. The landscape of the moors, the woodland, and the river next to my Dartington Studio, as well as the views from my home studio, give me inspiration. I am moved by certain qualities of light on forms, and I use a limited colour palette over a tonal ground – often grey, sienna or black – to effect contrast, order and balance. I hope to achieve a depth of feeling in my work and to be of service to the subject, showing those qualities that are timeless and contribute to the uplifting of the spirit. |
